ISO 14001 standard (EMS – Environmental Management System) is an internationally acknowledged and acclaimed management system suited for any and all organizations whose business processes have an impact on the environment. The standard itself is not intended for a specific branch of industry, which means that organizations from all branches can be certified according to ISO 14001.

Reasons for implementing the EMS

Organizations usually choose to implement and certify their EMS for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Market demands – an ISO 14001 certificate has become a prerequisite for conducting business with both domestic and international organizations;
  • Improving the competitiveness – this certificate has a valuable marketing potential, especially in the developed countries;
  • Meeting the legal requirements regarding environmental protection by systematic monitoring, identifying and complying to the legislative obligations regarding the environmental protection issues;
  • Systematic planning, conducting and reviewing of the environmental protection measures;
  • Enhancing the organization’s public image- organizations that responsibly address their environmental protection issues usually enjoy better market opportunities.

The benefits of implementing the EMS

The results of research conducted in various organizations that have implemented and certified their EMS indicate the following benefits:

  • Easier law application which logically leads to reduction of complaints from the external stakeholders regarding the pollution of environment, and thus to better relations with local or municipal government;
  • Improvement of environmental protection by systematic planning and conducting of the environmental protection activities;
  • Improved market position which enables: exporting to the more developed markets, gaining valuable suppliers or business partners etc.;
  • Reduction of expenditures by correct and economical use of primary materials, natural resources and correct waste control;
  • Reduced accident probabilities by systematic management and risk factor control;
  • Increased value and trust of the external stakeholders– this certificate is acknowledged both in our country and worldwide, and implies the responsible approach to environmental protection.

EMS implementation and certification activities

Choosing Tekon as your business partner gives you the opportunity to certify your EMS on short notice. Our approach encompasses the following activities:

  • Baseline environmental study- our highly experienced consultants perform on-site auditing by reviewing the existing documentation, interviewing the managers and other personnel and visiting all the organization’s locations, on basis of which they make the Baseline environmental study which notes all nonconformances with standard requirements;
  • Informing the management- our consultants concisely and in day-to-day language communicate the basic aspects of this management system to the top management;
  • Training the EMS implementation workgroup- our consultants assist the organization’s management in forming the EMS implementation workgroup and perform the training necessary for EMS design and implementation.
  • Planning the EMS implementation, from the beginning to the certification itself;
  • Designing the basic documents- in order to hasten the implementation process, our consulting team designs the basic document drafts, which are later reviewed and modified by the implementation workgroup, in cooperation with our consulting team. Our years-long experience proves this is the most efficient and the fastest way of reaching the projected goal, as opposed to having the workgroup write the documents from scratch with the consultants only checking them for nonconformities with the standard requirements;
  • Training the personnel for implementing and using the designed documents.
  • Distributing and working by the documents- using the EMS documents in everyday work helps root the EMS in the very core of the organization, which is a prerequisite for a successful certification;
  • Training the internal auditing team- the personnel trained for conducting the internal audits is responsible for checking whether EMS functions as planned.
  • Internal audit- the internal auditing team conducts the first EMS internal audit, under the supervision of our consultants;
  • Preparing for the certification- the client sends the request to the chosen accredited certification body. All non-conformities form the internal audit must be addressed before the appointed visit by the certification body representatives;
  • The certification- being the official audit by the external auditors, usually comprised of two parts: pre-auditing and auditing.

Tekon helped a considerable number of public and private organizations both from Serbia and countries in the region implement and certify their EMS.
